Objective: To provide adequate language assistance services to our members with limited English proficiency (LEP), ensuring they have equal access to credit union financial services and information.

- Language Assistance Coordinator
a. Appoint a Language Assistance Coordinator responsible for overseeing and managing the program. This position will be assigned to the President/CEO. - Identification of Language Needs
a. Identify the primary languages spoken by members through member communication, staffing suggestions and community outreach.
b. Use census tracts to look for possible areas of needs. - Bilingual Staff and Resources.
a. Identify current bilingual staff and hire additional staff where needed.
b. Maintain a database of translated materials (forms, brochures and key documents) as they are created.
c. Determine if additional resources are needed based on member needs. - Interpretation Services
a. Use available resources (staff, interpreters, Google Translate etc) to assist members as needed. - Translation Services
a. Determine if additional key forms should be translated in preparation for member needs.
b. Prioritize essential documents if it is determined that key forms are needed. - Multilingual Website
a. Evaluate if the credit union’s website should be available in alternative languages. - Training
a. Train staff on cultural sensitivity, effective communication with members with Limited English Proficiency and what to do if members need assistance. - Communication and Outreach
a. Promote the availability of language assistance services to members.
b. Inform members of their language rights and the credit union’s commitment to serving diverse communities. - Evaluate program and make changes on an as needed basis.
a. Allow members to give feedback on their experiences with the credit union’s language assistance program.
